Why Can't I Switch Off?
Have you ever sat down to relax only to find your mind racing?
Perhaps your body is still, but your thoughts are not.
You are replaying conversations. Thinking about tomorrow's tasks. Worrying about things that might happen. Mentally organising everyone else's lives while trying to enjoy a quiet evening.
Many women describe feeling exhausted yet unable to relax.
This can be confusing.
If you are tired, surely rest should come naturally.
But for some people, constantly thinking is not simply a habit. It is a way of staying prepared.
When life has taught us that we need to be vigilant, organised or responsible, switching off can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. The mind learns to stay alert even when there is no immediate danger.
Over time, this can lead to anxiety, sleep difficulties, irritability and emotional exhaustion.
The problem is not that you think too much.
Often, the problem is that your mind has become responsible for keeping everything together.
Counselling can help you understand what drives this constant mental activity and create space for a different relationship with yourself—one that does not require you to be on high alert all of the time.
Because rest is not something we earn after doing enough.
It is something we need in order to live well.
