The Story Beneath™
Understanding the experiences that shaped you, and the person you became.
Most of us know the visible story of our lives.
The events that happened. The people who influenced us. The choices we made. The things we achieved.
But beneath that visible story, there is often another one.
A quieter story.
The Story Beneath™
It can be found in the experiences, relationships, beliefs, expectations and roles that have shaped us, and in the ways we have learned to cope, protect ourselves and move through the world.
Sometimes we know exactly what has happened in our lives.
What we don't always understand is how those experiences have shaped who we are today.
Perhaps you find yourself asking:
Why do I react this way?
Why does this feel harder than it should?
Why do I keep repeating the same patterns?
Why can't I just move on?
Or perhaps you simply have a feeling that something from your past is still influencing the way you think, feel, relate or respond.
The Story Beneath™ begins with a different question:
What has shaped me?
Understanding instead of judgement
I don't believe people are broken.
I believe our responses make sense once we understand what has shaped them.
Anxiety that appears without warning.
The need to please others.
Difficulty trusting.
The feeling that you always have to be strong.
Perfectionism.
The exhaustion of carrying too much for too long.
Feeling disconnected from yourself.
These experiences can be difficult to live with, but they can also be clues.
Clues that may point towards experiences, relationships, beliefs and stories that have influenced the way you see yourself and the world around you.
This doesn't mean blaming your childhood, your family or your past.
It means becoming curious.
What happened? What did I learn from it? How did I adapt? And how might those adaptations still be affecting me now?
When we begin to understand those stories, we can begin to meet ourselves differently.
With curiosity rather than criticism.
With awareness rather than judgement.
And sometimes, with a little more compassion for the person we had to become.
Every woman carries experiences that have shaped her.
Some belong to her own lifetime.
Some have been shaped through relationships, family dynamics and the environments in which she grew up.
Some may connect to the generations before her, the beliefs, expectations, losses, strengths and survival strategies that were passed through families.
This is not about blame.
It is about understanding.
Because when we understand where something comes from, we can sometimes gain more choice in how we respond to it.
Understanding your story does not mean staying stuck in the past.
It means becoming more connected to yourself in the present.
The Story Beneath™ isn't about changing who you are.
It is about understanding yourself more fully.
When you begin to recognise why certain situations affect you, where particular beliefs came from, or why certain patterns have developed, something can begin to shift.
You may notice a pattern without immediately judging yourself for it.
You may understand a response rather than criticise it.
You may begin to question an old belief rather than automatically accept it as truth.
And you may begin to see that what helped you navigate an earlier chapter of life does not necessarily have to define every chapter that follows.
The past doesn't disappear.
But your relationship with it can change.
And when understanding begins to replace self-criticism, new possibilities can become visible.
For many years, I have been interested in one question:
Why do we become the people we become?
That question became even more personal through my own experiences and through listening to the stories of the women I have worked alongside.
It led me to understand that behind every person there is a story.
A story of relationships. A story of experiences. A story of what was spoken and what remained unspoken. A story of what was carried, protected and passed forward.
It isn't a counselling model or a step-by-step framework.
It is the philosophy that guides my work.
Whether we are working together through counselling or through reflective experiences such as Unthread™, The Story Beneath™ invites us to become curious about what has shaped us and what we want to understand differently.
Because understanding your story isn't about living in the past.
It is about becoming more connected to yourself in the present, and having greater choice in what comes next.
A different way of seeing yourself
Perhaps the question is not:
"What's wrong with me?"
Perhaps the question is:
"What has shaped me?"
And perhaps, when we begin to understand the answer, we find a little more freedom in choosing what comes next.
We cannot always choose the story that shaped us.
We can choose the understanding we carry forward.
