Why Do I Always Feel Overwhelmed?

The Hidden Signs of Nervous System Dysregulation

Feeling overwhelmed all the time? You might be dealing with nervous system dysregulation. Learn the signs and how to calm your body and mind.

Do you ever feel like life is just... too much?

Maybe you wake up already exhausted. Your to-do list feels impossible, your brain won’t stop spinning, and the smallest things send you over the edge. You’re not lazy, weak, or broken—your nervous system might just be stuck in overdrive.

What Does ‘Overwhelm’ Actually Mean?

Overwhelm isn’t just about having too much on your plate. It’s a state where your nervous system gets flooded, leaving you feeling either panicked and restless or totally shut down.

Dr. Stephen Porges, who developed the Polyvagal Theory, explains that our nervous system is wired to protect us. When it senses danger (real or not), it triggers fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses. But when this happens repeatedly—especially if you’ve experienced trauma—your body can get stuck in survival mode. Even when you’re safe, your brain doesn’t always get the memo.

Signs You Might Be Stuck in Overwhelm Mode

  • You constantly feel on edge, like something bad is about to happen.
  • You get easily irritated or snap at small things.
  • Your body feels tense—tight shoulders, clenched jaw, stomach issues.
  • You find it hard to concentrate or make decisions.
  • You either overcommit to everything or avoid things completely.
  • You struggle to relax, even when you have the chance.

Why Trauma Can Keep You Stuck Here

Imagine a car alarm that never turns off, even when there’s no danger. That’s what happens when past trauma leaves your nervous system hyper-alert. It’s not your fault—it’s a learned survival response. The good news? You can retrain your system to feel safe again.

What You Can Do to Start Calming Your Nervous System

  1. Ground Yourself – Press your feet into the floor, hold something textured, or name five things you can see right now to remind yourself you're safe.
  2. Breathe Deeply – Slow, long exhales tell your body it’s okay to relax.
  3. Move Gently – Walking, stretching, or shaking out your arms can help discharge stuck energy.
  4. Therapy Helps – Processing trauma in a safe space helps reset your system and break the cycle of overwhelm.

You don’t have to live in a constant state of stress. Your body can learn safety again. And when it does? Life doesn’t feel so impossible anymore.
